My Thankful Thought

\
Sometimes the dishes overwhelm me. There's always a nice little pile going. I'm not sure how only three people can manage to use so many dishes. Especially when one of us isn't even half size yet.

And I majorly dislike washing dishes. I'd rather fold sheets. That's saying something. Pots and pans are the worst. I've been known to burn the bottom of things when I cook so that always makes them horribly awful to clean.

We've been in this house two years and I still have problems with the stovetop burning things. It's totally the stovetop, right?

I've been trying to see the beauty in my never-ending, not-so-lovely pile of dishes. Do you know what this pile of dishes means?

It means we have food. Lots and lots of food. Good food too. Sanitary food.

These dishes remind to be thankful for what we have. So many people do not have enough food or clean water to drink. We do. In abundance.

These dishes are beautiful, just like the laundry covered living room. They speak of happiness, family, and fullness. So this Thanksgiving, I am thankful for my smelly mountain pile of dishes.

We have so many blessings to share with others.

May I never forget that.

What is on your thankful list this Thanksgiving?

The Day of the Doctor

It was Saturday. The Day of the Doctor. And oh boy, was it a day! If you are new around here, here's the scoop: I am a Whovian. What does that mean? That I am a total geek over the BBC show, Doctor Who.

Saturday was Doctor Who's 50th anniversary episode. And we decided to celebrate in style and just have a blast doing it! I must give credit to Hubby because it was all his idea. Even though it's not his thing, he suggested it because he knows that my siblings and I are crazy about it. He is brilliant.

We had so much fun planning all the little things. We even dressed up! Because we like to be weird awesome like that! And since we don't get TV channels, we all went to my parents' house instead of my place.

Doctor Who food

Of course we had to plan the spread. No party is complete without a little themed food, right? And my wonderful sister put together all the labels.

Yes, I do have a TARDIS ice box. Doesn't everyone? And blue Hawaiian Punch with Sprite is pretty good stuff.

Oh yes, did we have fun!

The Doctor (Matt Smith) (right), Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill)

There was one Doctor Who episode that had a pregnant character in it. That wasn't really pregnant. It was all a dream but I still figured it was the one person I could feasibly dress up as.

Tada!

I also brought a banana because the Doctor says you should always bring a banana to a party. The glasses are for seeing time vortex stuff and the sonic screwdriver is for everything else. Except on anything made out of wood.

Even the clock got to dress up.

We enjoyed the 50th episode immensely! Now the countdown starts for the Christmas special! Yay!

No worries, we will be back to normal posts after this one. Most of the time. I promise.

How To Turn An Old Sweater Into A Pillow

How to Turn an Old Sweater into a Pillow

I love sweaters. Like, REALLY LOVE sweaters. I also love pillows. What better way is there to decorate for the colder seasons than combining the two? And since I happened to have this particular sweater on hand, it was perfect.

I had an old sweater than was really long and a size too big. It was wonderful, but I didn't really wear it anymore. But I hated to part with it. And so I decided to make it a pillow.

How to Turn an Old Sweater into a Pillow

My pillow insert was 18". And it fit perfectly in between the side seams. This sweater is such a thick, loose, chunky knit that I wanted to minimize the amount of sewing I had to do. Cutting it this way meant that I only had to zig-zag the cut edge to keep it from unraveling, line up the side seams with the side seams on the pillow, fold the edges over and sew them closed, creating an envelope type cover.

Since the insert was 18", I added an inch across for the seams, making it 19" across. Even with my attempts to sew as little as possible, I still had a few issues. Running a zig-zag stitch across a sweater with this knit is asking for trouble. The loose ends will get pulled down into the machine as it pulls it along. I expected this to happen and, sure enough, it did. I had to stop several times and cut the threads where it had jammed down into the machine and start over a little further back.

Remember to back-stitch!

Once the side was zig-zagged, I folded each side over at the sweater's side seams. There is quite a bit of overlap. Which I didn't worry about because, hello, less sewing! Than I sewed a straight stitch up each open side.

Sort of.

Instead of sewing each side once, I sewed one flap down on each side and then sewed the other flap up MOST OF THE WAY. Since this is an envelope cover, I was really afraid that if I sewed both flaps down over each other, that it would put too much strain on the knit when I was stuffing it.

How to Turn an Old Sweater into a Pillow

Here's a shot of it inside out where you can see that one flap is completely closed while the other is sewn almost up to the other flap but then left free.

How to Turn an Old Sweater into a Pillow

Here's a view of the flaps with the cover right side out. The un-sewn flap is tucked up under the outer flap and no one knows that is isn't sewn all the way. It stays inside just fine.

This was a thick sweater so sewing the seams took some patience and maneuvering. I think I sewed all the seams shut with the presser foot up all the way because it was so thick. Especially sewing over the sweater seams. It was like going up a hill and the presser foot only goes up so high. Sometimes it takes some coaxing to get it through.

Then I turned it right side out and stuffed it. I added the leather cord for some interest. It was the little "belt" that came with the sweater so I already had that too. Just wrapped it around and ran it through the sides to help hold it in place.

It isn't perfect. It's kinda floppy. The corners look a bit different. But it has character.

And I love it.

Beauty does not equal perfection. Sometimes beauty is all in the imperfections. I'm still learning this.

The great thing with sweater pillows, is that they span a couple seasons. Fall, winter, and maybe early spring if you happen to live where it still snows in April. Down here in Virginia, fall and winter are probably all it will make it through. Maybe. I just like sweaters way too much.

Decorating With Sheepskins

I am in love with all the faux sheepskins everywhere! They are so soft and fluffy. And all the wonderful texture...love it. Can you believe that I wasn't a fan only a few short months ago? Really. Then I picked one up on a trip to Ikea.

I was sold.

It was Little Man's fault. He just sat there innocently petting it. It was soft so I thought it might be nice for the new nursery, in addition to adding some texture. Except now it's not in the nursery. It snuck into our master bedroom

See?

We're all in love now. Little Man loves to stop and stand on it. Hubby likes how soft it is. I just love it. Which is weird considering I've never been a fan of fake fur. At least not since I was 10.

And now every room in our house needs one. Or two. At least.

If you're like me and hesitant about incorporating some furry things into your decor, have a look at some of these great ways to use sheepskins. Maybe you'll be converted, maybe not. That's ok too.

Boy Or Girl? The Big Reveal!

Are you all dying to know? Will Baby Real Inspired be a he or a she? Will Little Man have a little brother or sister?

Well, the time has come.

Baby #2 is another boy!

Our life is going to get very interesting around here. I can barely keep up with one energetic little boy, I'm not sure how I will keep up with two! I'm sure I will never be bored!

At almost 26 weeks, I'm feeling pretty good. Although, I must admit to gaining a few more pounds than I should have by now.

This little guy love to tumble around. It feels like a dance party in my tummy every day. Especially at night, of course. Couple that with Little Man's recent {non-}sleep issues, there is not much sleep to be had for this momma.

We're still working on the nursery. The painting is almost done! I can't wait to start putting the room together. You can check out the mood board for the new nursery and see the progress so far.

We are very excited and we think that's it's great that Little Man will have a little best bud to play with!

TV Armoire Organization

TV Armoire Organization

Just imagine this giant armoire thing full to the gills with DVDs, cords and controllers, batteries, and any other random small thing we happened to find laying around that day. I was soooo tired of it! But of course, I always forgot about it since we close thing up every night and nobody sees inside when it's closed. But, oh man! Embarrassing when we opened it up to have a movie night with our friends!

Of course, they didn't care. That's what friends are for, right? But it sure bothered me. And Hubby loves anything organized so I figured I had better get this little thing checked off my to-do list. Because, really, how hard was this to take care of?

TV Armoire Organization Baskets Coral

Coral Shells Armoire

I started with this big piece of fake coral{or should I say faux to sound all swanky?}. I splurged and bought it for the full price of $25 at Bed, Bath, and Beyond several months ago. I bought it specifically for the top shelf in the armoire to try and help make that shelf look less like a black hole. The glass jars were a yard sale find that I filled up with white sea shells from Michael's.

TV Armoire Organization Baskets

We use the very bottom drawer in this thing to hold DVDs. The drawer was actually made to hold video tapes so the DVDs don't fit perfectly but it still works. Still, after a while we ran out of DVD room in the drawer and so we began stacking them anywhere. The solution was three of these white KNARRA baskets from IKEA. It helps.

TV Armoire Organization

That left me with trying to organize all the video games and various cords and controllers. I found this big tray at Walmart to do that job. It was the smallest shelf so a tray was the only thing short enough to slide in. I wanted two, but there's a plug outlet strip in the very back so I can't turn the tray lengthwise. Great for minimizing cords behind the armoire, not great for fitting trays in.

TV Armoire Organization

And even with my attempt at organization, this is what the inside looks like on a {mostly} daily basis. Dust and all.

I try.

Inspired Friday

Yay! It's Friday again! I love Fridays. It means Hubby is home all weekend. Tonight we are kicking our weekend off by going to go see the new Thor.

I am so excited about it! For a couple reasons. Mainly, good actors with really great voices{here's lookin' at you Tom Hiddleston!}. Second reason is Christopher Eccleston as the villain. I'm I the only one that wants to watch movies for the reason that it has actors from Doctor Who in them?

I'm totally geeking out tonight.

Anywho, on to the post...

Starfish II Framed Wall Decor

Life
{SOURCE}

I am totally loving that bedroom with all the fur! I am really starting to fall in love with furry things in home decor. And the framed starfish would be so easy to do yourself!

Well, we're off for Thor in a bit! I hope you do a little something to kick off your weekend tonight. Even if it's go grab a coffee and wander around Target not spending money. I know, it's impossible. One day I will go to Target and NOT buy something. Maybe.

Happy weekend!

Thrift Store Scores + The Giddy Factor

I went to Goodwill the other day. And it was one of those wonderful days when the store is chock full of good stuff. I've discovered that Monday and Tuesday are usually the best days for shopping the thrift stores around here. I think it's because everyone comes out to buy everything over the weekend and then, on Monday, they replenish all the shelves.

It's a theory, anyway.

Whatever the reason, it was a smorgasbord of amazingness. I had a few moments where I almost couldn't contain myself. Like, "I'm about to break into song and dance right here in the book corner" excited. I need to make a habit of this early week shopping thing.

Care to see some of the loot I brought home?

This mirror.

Love.

When I shared my fall mantel a couple weeks back, I mentioned my awkwardly long and narrow mantel and my burning desire to have a neat mirror that worked over it. I knew this mirror was the one as soon as I laid eyes on it. It isn't super huge, but it's a decent size. And I love the shape! All it needs is a good cleaning and a coat of clean white paint.

Also, it was only $5. Total score!

Second score: this vase/thing. Again, another love at first sight moment. I'm not sure I'll be putting water straight into it, but a small cup would fit perfectly inside to do that job. And I think it looks pretty durn cute just sitting empty on a shelf being its bad self.

All these assorted little frames for various things.

And then this cool wall decor! It's good sized and heavy. It needs some work because the paint is chipping. We'll see if I can make it look better.

Want to hear about the one that got away? This coffee table. I've been wanting a round coffee table for months, but I just wasn't sure about splurging on it. It definitely needed some work because it was a bit wobbly, but it was the price tag of $55 that made me walk away. I plan on checking back soon to see if it's still there. Do you think that price was a little high for a wobbly coffee table at Goodwill?

I am so proud of my little haul! There were many other things that I would have loved to bring home, but I had to pass them up. I stuck with things that made me giddy when I saw them or that I had a definite plan in mind for. I'm slowly learning that, when you have a small budget, the giddiness factor is important when thrift store shopping. Otherwise, you will buy EVERYTHING!

Have any of your own giddiness-inducing thrift store finds? Share them with me in the comments, on the Facebook pageInstagram, or Twitter. I'd love to see them!

October Review

It's already November? And I still haven't started Christmas shopping yet. I should probably get on that. To bring in November, how about a review of my 5 top favorite posts from October?

I put together my first fall mantel.

The nursery needed some major prep before painting.

Happy November and may your Christmas shopping be easy!

Inspired Friday

Happy Friday! Another rainy day here in Virginia. I'm just sitting, enjoying the rain falling, while sipping some hot pumpkin pie spice coffee and eating pumpkin muffins. Little Man is taking his first nap in about a week and I am one happy momma! Oh, and the latest Little Man update is that he climbed out of his crib for the first time yesterday. I'm not sure how he did it, but he's turning into quite a climber.

Since sharing my living room and some of my goals for it, I've been thinking a lot about rugs. The room needs a rug more than anything else I think. Since rugs are a big expense, I'm not about to just go buy one. When I do buy one, it will be because I love it and I pinched pennies for it. So, I've been keeping an eye out for great rugs.

I thought today I'd share some of my favorites. Even if they won't all work in my living room, they might work in yours!
