What I'm Loving Right Now: Ikat

Wow, it's been a couple weeks since I've been back here! The break wasn't planned but things just happened. A couple weeks ago, there was a death in the family, then we went out of town to attend my cousin's wedding, and I was just plain tired. Oh, and our house was finally getting put back together from the big leak that happened months ago. It's been a crazy, tiring month.

What I'm Loving Right Now: Ikat. What it is and 11 ways to incorporate it into your home decor

Today is all about Ikat. What is Ikat? According to Wikipedia, Ikat "is a dyeing technique used to pattern textiles that employs a resist dyeing process on the warp fibres, the weft fibres, or in the rare and costly 'double ikat' both warp and weft, prior to dyeing and weaving." It involves dyeing the threads according to the pattern before they are woven and then lining them all up correctly. That takes some skill! It's also what gives the pattern its hazy look, which is part of why I love it so much!

I tend to just happen to discover things(like how awesome sheepskins are!) and I'm just now discovering the awesomeness of different global textiles. I've never been(and don't think I ever will be) a fan of flowery rugs, but I'm really loving the geometrical patterns of Ikat and Kilim weaves. I've already talked about how my dream kitchen involves a kilim rug on the floor.

Real woven Ikat is expensive and harder to come by but there are plenty of cheaper options out there if you want to incorporate the look into your home. Someday, maybe I'll be able to have some of the real stuff, but that's not happening on my budget right now. Especially with two littles running around dropping crumbs everywhere. For now, I'm going for the cheap stuff.

Behold, my newest Ikat additions!

What I'm Loving Right Now: Ikat. Incorporate this trend into your home with a blue and gray ikat ottoman!

I spied this ottoman at Walmart several months ago and this was the lone one left after all that time. I think everyone had forgotten about it because it stayed in the same spot in a corner of the furniture section for several weeks. I ended up spending about $20 on it.
