Nautical Summer Mantel

Since tomorrow is the first day of summer, it just seemed right to show you all my nautical summer mantel. Actually, it might just turn into my all-the-time mantel! And it all started with some super cheapo, thrifted art.

I love the beachy feel and I love being out on the water. There's not much better for a hot, southern summer day than lazing around in a pontoon on the lake and catching some fish. Or renting a beach house on the ocean for a week...it just makes me relaxed thinking about it. The smell of sunscreen, midnight walks on the beach just because you can, sand everywhere, and just the whole casual atmosphere is wonderful! I am thinking that living near the coast makes it acceptable for me to decorate our place like a beach house. I want to evoke that relaxed feeling everyday!

This ship "painting" that I picked up at the thrift store really isn't one. The frame isn't exactly a real frame either. The whole thing is basically cardboard. I could pick it up and chunk it somewhere pretty easily. I managed to get it for a little over $3, which is great because it's really not worth more than that!

There was some damage to the picture and the frame where a sticker or something had pulled off the top layer of cardboard/paper/whatever-this-is-made-of. The best cure for that is paint of course! The part I really liked was the area around the picture that was gold and something that looks kinda like grasscloth or burlap. I wanted to keep that part showing so I taped it off. I gave the frame a coat of primer and 3 coats of white paint, leftover from the boys' room.

Now it's gone all cottage chic on me!

To create my mantel, I did what I always do: shop the house. It took me a week or so to finally get it here. I kept changing it and then leaving it for a few days to see what I thought. I've decided that this is the end result simply because I'm tired of redoing it. Honest confessions found here!

I do think that the end result is a very beach cottage feel. And I love that. Come back next week and I'll show you the entire nautical summer living room!

The Big Guest Room Switcharoo

The last time I did a post on the guest room, it looked like this:

Eh.

There's way too much big, dark, heavy furniture going on in there. And the layout really wasn't working. Everything is making this room look way smaller than it actually is.

When we decided to move the boys' room, switching all the rooms around just started making sense. So we moved the boys into the old "junk room", and moved the guest room into the old nursery(which is also the smallest bedroom). It used to look like this:

Ah! It looks so tiny in there!

But now...

It works. So much soothing...

And I finally got to pull out my old thrift store trunk to use as a side table!

Even this little munchkin was enjoying it.

We painted this room two years ago and I still liked the color so we were all set. It's definitely not finished yet, but it has to be functional anyway since we have family that come to visit a lot. It is still missing some small important things, like lamps. The room is small and it's full of big furniture but it still feels roomy and airy. I'm liking the direction this is going!

What do you think of the big guest room switcharoo? Do you have any suggestions to make that might hasten its finishing? What would you do?

My Favorite Chair

Let me introduce you to my favorite cheap chair. Or chairs, that is. I actually have 4 of them in our house.

My Favorite Chair: The Agen Wicker Chair from Ikea

Why do I like them? Because they are cheap. Like $35 bucks cheap. The Agen wicker chairs are the cheapest wicker chairs at Ikea. And they are light. We move them around to different rooms for extra seating when we have company. Little Man moves these chairs around and tips them over and they have held up surprisingly well.

They obviously aren't as comfy as a big armchair but they have worked for us as a budget friendly seating option. We just didn't have the money for the big chairs right off and getting some hasn't been high on the priority list. Sorry friends! They really aren't made of evil, I promise!

But, they are perfect for the little coastal vibe I got going on in here.

I used to hate wicker. Now, I embrace it. In all its noisy, creaky glory.

May Review

Well, it's June and that means it's almost officially summer! We got the pool up and running but the weather has been weird this year and it's not super hot yet. We're planning family vacation, trips to the beach, maybe an amusement park...maybe. I'm not a huge fan of doing anything in the summer that requires me to be outside of my air conditioned house.

Here's a look back at May...

I did a book review on the Nester's new book.

I'm trying out a new color combo in the bathroom.

My plans for the weekend are full of fun. Not really. Mostly just cleaning and organizing the kitchen. What will you be up to?

I hope you all have a great weekend doing whatever it is you'll be doing!

5 Tips for Decorating with Vintage Furniture

Do you have any vintage furniture laying around that you are attached to but aren't sure how to work them into your home? I have a few pieces that I love because of the place they've had in my family but I probably would never have chosen them in a store. So how do I work them into my modern beach cottage style?

5 Tips for Decorating with Vintage Furniture

I love these 70's end tables. They're big, clunky, super sturdy, and beat up. I grew up having these around the house and jumped at the chance to have them when my mom offered. I think these things could survive an apocalypse. Like cockroaches.

They certainly survived my family of 6 kids. We used them to eat on, sit on, set our drinks down without coasters, you name it. Now they are surviving my kids and our many house guests quite beautifully. A designer may never have put them in our living room, but I love them and they put up with a ton of abuse. I would never get rid of them.

5 Tips for Decorating with Vintage Furniture

I recently moved our guest room around and I put this antique night stand in there.

We bought this and the entire set that it matches, with a dresser and two twin bed frames, from some friends-that-might-as-well-be-family. The set had been passed down through her family and she had recently re-stained them. I fell in love. So far, this is the only piece that has found a home in our house. The rest of the set is patiently waiting in the shed.

The dresser in our guest room. This mid-century dresser belonged to my dad's parents. I recently gave it a new coat of paint and replaced the knobs, since it was pretty beat up and one of the knobs was missing.

Yes, it's in the same room with the antique nightstand.

In our bedroom, I mixed this chippy painted dresser with a modern gray patterned duvet set, modern orb lamps, and herringbone lampshades. The dresser really isn't vintage, but it looks like something you could find at an antique flea market so I'll include it as an example.

I really love mixing modern and vintage in design. Unexpected pairings add interest and character. And I get to actually use old furniture that's special to me instead of letting it sit in the shed or getting rid of it.

I've put together a list of 5 tips for using vintage furniture in your home.

5 Tips for Decorating with Vintage Furniture

1. New hardware

Sometimes all it takes to give a piece new life is to change out the hardware. Or you could even paint the old hardware. Make it look more your style with this cheap, easy trick.

2. Don't be afraid to re-stain, reupholster, or paint

I love my end tables as they are, but the dresser got new white paint and the nightstand was re-stained. Sometimes you just have to take the chance and make a big mess! You can always redo it again!

One of the resources I checked when I was redoing the dresser was One King's Lane New Home Décor Resource. They have some great information on different types of furniture and decor ideas. I was able to get some info on the mid-century design and get some other ideas too!

Redoing something may take some time, but it will be worth it to have a piece you will actually love and use. Which brings me to number 3.

3. Use pieces that you love

If you don't love it, it won't work. Simple as that.

4. Use it!

Too many people are afraid of really using their old things. I understand that no one wants to ruin something that is old or important to them but, when it comes down to it, these things are just that. Things. Use your "things" with confidence and make them a loved part of your home, just like my old clunky side tables.

5. Accessorize

This is the fun part! You get to choose what to display with your furniture. This is where the real mixing and matching, making it yours part comes in to play.

You don't have to put all the antique stuff in the room with the antique furniture. You don't have to put like styles together. Put that shapely white porcelain lamp on that clunky 70's side table! Pair that chippy painted old dresser with a modern medallion print on the bed! Put that wicker chair next to that mid-century modern dresser!

You can do just about anything and make it work, as long as you love it and do it with confidence!

Have you ever redone any old furniture? What are some ways you've mixed and matched in your home?
