How to Make No-Sew, Knock-Off IKEA Curtains
I put up my boys' vintage modern nursery reveal last fall and I just realized that I never told you all about the curtains! I hinted at a curtain tutorial and then never did it. Whoops!
Well, here it is now and it's super easy!
Boys' Vintage Modern Nursery Reveal (and free printables!)
Reveal time! It's only taken two years but I'm finally ready to reveal our boys' vintage modern nursery! I warn you now, this is going to be a long post filled with lots of pictures.
My original plan for this week's post was something all fall-ish but that fell through after a sudden case of Iritis over the weekend. Apparently, stabbing pain, light sensitivity, and blurry vision are trigger phrases for Ophthalmologists. Say those magic words and they will work you in. Basically, iritis means my iris was inflamed from getting poked a while back and now I have steroid drops and everything is happy again.
And my fall decorations are still in the attic.
This means you get the final nursery reveal instead!
I'm sorry that I have to put you through such suffering.
I happen to love reveal posts. I love seeing before and afters. This is why I watch HGTV after all. Heaven knows it ain't for all the scripted, blown out of proportion discoveries of an unexpected problem in every single episode of every single show. It's being able to see the space transform into something different and beautiful!

DIY Floor Pillows for Kids
Back almost a year ago when I started planning the new nursery, I knew I wanted some child-size floor pillows. Kids are always playing on the floor and it just seemed right to give them some big comfy pillows to lounge on.
Since navy and green was the decided upon color scheme, I kept my eyes out for some cool solid or patterned material that I could make into pillow covers. I found a great green tablecloth at the thrift store that was perfect! I used some of the material for a Christmas pillow and, after the floor pillow, I still have enough for one more for around the house. For a second floor pillow, I chose a cadet blue chevron stripe that I found at Hancock Fabric.
Little Man approved.
I can't wait until this nursery is completely finished and I can show it to you! We're working on purchasing a storage system for toy organization, hanging a gallery wall, and finishing up the curtains. Once those are checked off the list, just you wait! It's gonna be awesome!

Because children will be laying on them and making them flat, I decided to buy feather inserts for my covers so I could fluff them. And if I decide that I'm finding way too many little feathers that little hands have pulled out, I can just switch out the inserts. Because I bought them cheap at Ikea. I think both 26"x 26" feather euro pillows were about $15 each.
To make my little kiddie floor pillows, I followed this great tutorial from Vintage Revivals. I only cut my material an inch bigger than my inserts to allow for a seam. I didn't want my covers too roomy.
Just ignore my not matched up pattern at the seams. I'm pretty sure that's a feat of magic, lining up prints when you sew. I doubt I will master it anytime soon. But, if I'm not analyzing other people's pillows at their houses, they must not be analyzing mine when they're at my house. There is beauty in imperfection and they are made with love.
At least that's my rationale.
In reality, I struggle to sew a straight seam. I'm hoping I'll get better with practice but I think I'm a hopeless case of impatience.

Nursery Prep Work
You know when you have that room that you keep meaning to get to but somehow never do? Behold our former junk room! Which is now on it's way to becoming the new nursery. Took me long enough.
It was also one of those rooms that turns out to need more prep work than you anticipated.
I may have mentioned before that all the trim upstairs had a peeling paint problem because several layers of latex paint had been painted over oil-based paint. This room was the worst so far.
The first few pictures are from my phone. Because at 6 months pregnant, I saw no reason to make a trip down the stairs when I had my trusty smart phone with me. Although the extra exercise would have been worth it, I'm sure.
This closet door was the worst. I tried to peel off as much as I could, thinking that it would stop and I could sand the edges and just prime over it. Nope. It just kept going. And it was everywhere.
The window sill, the built-ins, the baseboards, the doors. Ugh.
Finally, we got to the priming step. Which I kinda skipped out on since I wanted to cover everything the right way with oil-based primer. Oil-based is nasty, fumey stuff that will singe the hairs in your nose. No painting for me. Though it didn't really matter because from that one room upstairs the fumes spread through the whole house, top to bottom.
Thank you, kind friends and family, for sacrificing your nose hairs.
The built-ins have this weird laminate thing on top of the desk area. WEIRD. It needs to be painted. I brought out the electrical sander and sanded that down with some 100 grit sandpaper. Hopefully, it's roughed up the surface enough that the two coats each of oil-based primer, paint, and some polyacrylic, will hold up to the kids.
Two coats of primer was necessary for the raw wood inside the shelves. The wood was also full of knots, so before priming, I filled as many of the cracks and small holes as I could with spackle. Should I have used wood filler instead? Probably.
Oh, and we painted the ceiling too. And by "we" I mean my aforementioned kind friends and family members.
It is so great to have all the prep FINISHED! I had originally planned to have the entire nursery finished by now. My goal is by Christmas. That will give Little Man two months to get used to the new room and toddler bed. I hope.

My sister kinda got into the paint demolition. We couldn't get it all off so what was left was sanded and primed.

Nursery Mood Board
After the other day's big announcement, I promised to show you the mood board I've been working on for the new nursery. I am super excited to decorate this room! I feel like, for once, I actually know exactly what I'm going to do with it before I start. I should decorate like this more often!
When I started out, I was unsure of how to incorporate several things into this room. The first was my old mobile{it's slightly different than this one, but same little animals and colors}. The second was Little Man's bright green table fan. And coming in third was an old cross-stitch that had hung in Hubby's room as a baby.
After seeing Kelly's office over at View Along The Way, I decided go with white on the walls and a navy-ish blue on the back of the built-ins. Navy goes with green so the fan, cross-stitch, and mobile will all work perfectly together. Throw in some more green pillows, find a few prints that match and have a timeless or vintage feel, a little bit of vintage, a bit of modern, and tada!
I love how the blue and green are the main colors with little pops of red and yellow mixed in. I'm not usually a fan of all those colors mixed together, but I think this is one way to do it that won't make my eyeballs bleed or keep my kids bouncing off the walls. It makes for a fun, colorful, nursery, but one that is still relaxing.
Most of the stuff on this board are things I haven't actually bought for the room, but what I have is similar. Like the green pillow. I'm totally making that one out of a tablecloth I found at the thrift store. And I may paint the toddler bed so I don't have espresso finish and cherry finish sharing the same space.
And that chair is on my wish list. $399 a pop and $149 for the matching ottoman! I have one job for you, Tax Return...
You will see it all, complete with a source list, when it is done!
So what do you think? Do have any favorite nursery color combos?

I give you: The Vintage Modern Nursery. Be gentle, it's my first ever design board. And I have no idea why it's kinda blurry.
